Agriculture Department Epidemiological Approaches for Food Safety. Deadline: April 05, 1999. Synopsis: Proposals should be multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary. Proposals are to describe how research outcomes will be transferred for implementation. The program will support research in the following areas: a) identification of sources and reservoirs of pathogenic organisms and their toxins; b) determination of the levels of microbial contamination in products; c) identification of farm-based production practices that contribute to increased prevalence of pathogens; and d) identification of potential sites of contamination. Synopsis: The purpose of the program is to assist federal regulatory agencies in making decisions about the safety of introducing into the environment genetically modified organisms. Topics are: Introduction into the environment of genetically engineered organisms. Large-scale deployment of genetically engineered organisms. Statistical methodology and quantitative measures of risks associated with field testing of genetically modified organisms. The program will also support a conference to review whether a introducing a pest resistance gene increases the fitness of weeds. Synopsis: The program assists eligible applicants in carrying out research and development projects that address aspects of U.S. fisheries. Applicants should insure that their proposals address one of the following priorities as they pertain to marine or Great Lakes species: minimize interactions between fisheries and protected or non-targeted species; rebuild overfished fisheries or maintain healthy fish stocks; obtain maximum social and economic benefits from harvestable marine resources; promote aquaculture development in the marine environment; and conserve and enhance essential fish habitat. Synopsis: The USAMRMC is soliciting applications on prostate cancer research. The overall goal of this funding effort is to promote research directed toward conquering prostate cancer. Sponsor: Office of Naval proposals aimed at exploiting unique features of free electron lasers for medical and related materials science research. Proposals for research are invited that lead to medical applications of FEL technology. The period of performance may be up to three years. Advanced Lithography. Sponsor: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Deadline: March 22, 1999. Synopsis: DARPA is soliciting proposals to understand and overcome specific technological obstacles to the realization of lithography for 100 nm critical dimensions and smaller and the supporting technologies relevant to more than one lithography technology option. Synopsis: The DR program is pursuing revolutionary technologies driven by severe form factor constraints. The research challenge is to develop solutions that achieve the desired functional capabilities while overcoming the limitations of both the on-board processors and the data communications network. Each proposal must describe how the software solution will realize the following: the reprogrammable, coordinated control of a networked group of extremely small, mobile robots; and convincing laboratory demonstration of the software solution on a collection of surrogate, mobile robot platforms. The Secretary of Education is particularly interested in applications that propose to focus on research that leads to answering significant questions on the assessment of language acquisition and academic achievement for limited English proficient students. This particular priority is focused on international disability research information exchanges. Energy Department Complex and Collective Phenomena. Deadline: April 21, 1999. Synopsis: This program will support work on the frontiers of basic research in disciplines including materials sciences, chemical sciences, engineering sciences, geosciences and energy biosciences. Work is intended to be revolutionary and may involve multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary efforts. Research is expected to strengthen the basis for understanding complex and collective phenomena currently viewed from a single domain such as the atomic level or continuum mechanics. Synopsis: The National Center for Research Resources is continuing its competitive Shared Instrumentation Grant Program initiated in Fiscal Year 1982. This grant award mechanism would support production and sequencing of expression cDNA libraries based on multiple stages of pancreatic development. Synopsis: The NIH invites investigator-initiated research grant applications to study the mechanisms by which diabetes results in neuropathies and other neurological complications and to apply this information to the development of interventions. The etiology of diabetic neuropathy is complex, involving metabolic and vascular effects. Recent evidence suggests that deficiencies in neurotrophic factors may also play a role.
